Wordpress team has just announced Wordpress 2.2 “Getz” released about 5 hours ago at the time of writing. The name Getz was given to the version 2.2 to honour tenor saxophonist Stan Getz. The development team has done a good job for deliver the updates with more than 200 bug fixed and some new features in well under 4 month (which is their standard goal of a major release).

Here’s some great new features lined up in this release:

* A new set of WordPress-specific XML-RPC APIs that allow for editing pages, setting categories, and much more.
* We now use jQuery for a number of internal functions, and hope to transition all of our JS to use it. (Wordpress team still need volunteers for this.)
* Comment feeds now support multiple formats, including Atom.
* Internal mail functions now use phpMailer, which allows for things like SMTP support.
* Able to set database collation and character set in your config file.
* Able to to hardcode your site and WP URL in the config file, overriding the values in the DB.
* Increased the inline documentation of a number of functions inside of WP, which should help you navigate those parts of the code.
